Cloud Architect

Design the infrastructure that powers modern software.

advanced Remote friendly

What does a Cloud Architect do?

Cloud architects design the systems that modern companies run on — choosing the right services, designing for scale and resilience, and keeping costs under control. You work across networking, security, databases, and compute to make sure everything holds together under real-world load. This path takes time to get into but pays off significantly. Good fit if you enjoy deep technical problems and want to specialise in something most people never attempt.

Who it fits

People who enjoy systems thinking, like understanding how the pieces fit together, and want to work at the architectural level rather than feature level.

Suits structured learners who enjoy reading documentation and working through certifications.

Starter projects

Good projects to practise and add to a portfolio.

  • Deploy a static website to S3 with a CloudFront CDN
  • Build a serverless API with Lambda and API Gateway
  • Provision infrastructure with Terraform on a free tier
  • Set up a basic Kubernetes cluster with a sample app

// ROADMAP

Cloud Architect career roadmap

Estimated time: 18–24 months

Badges show what each resource is. Only items marked certification lead to a professional credential — everything else is learning material.

1

Cloud Fundamentals & Associate Cert

10–14 weeks

Start with AWS Solutions Architect Associate. It is the most recognised cloud certification and gives you a solid, structured grounding in cloud concepts, services, and architecture patterns.

2

Infrastructure as Code

4–6 weeks

Architects define infrastructure in code. Master Terraform — it is vendor-neutral and the industry standard. Learn modules, state management, and remote backends.

3

Kubernetes & Container Orchestration

6–8 weeks

Architects design systems that scale. Kubernetes is how modern workloads scale reliably. Learn the core concepts deeply — pods, deployments, services, ingress, RBAC.

4

System Design & Architecture Patterns

4–6 weeks

Learn microservices, event-driven architecture, circuit breakers, and how to design for fault tolerance and scalability. The System Design Primer is the best free resource available.

5

Professional Certification & Specialisation

12–16 weeks

Pursue AWS Solutions Architect Professional or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect. These signal genuine architectural competence and are required for senior cloud roles at large companies.
