Blockchain Developer
Build decentralised applications and smart contracts.
What does a Blockchain Developer do?
Blockchain developers build applications that run on distributed networks — writing smart contracts that execute automatically, building DeFi protocols, and creating applications that operate without a central authority. The space moves fast and the technical bar is high. This path takes time to get into but pays off significantly. Good fit if you enjoy deep technical problems and want to specialise in something most people never attempt.
Who it fits
People with strong programming fundamentals who are genuinely curious about decentralised systems and want to work in a fast-moving, high-stakes domain.
Suits self-directed learners who are comfortable building in an evolving ecosystem with sparse documentation.
Skills you need

Starter projects
Good projects to practise and add to a portfolio.
- Deploy a Hello World smart contract on a testnet
- Build a simple token (ERC-20) in Solidity
- Create a basic NFT minting page
- Connect a React frontend to a smart contract with ethers.js
// ROADMAP
Blockchain Developer career roadmap
Estimated time: 10–16 months
Badges show what each resource is. Only items marked certification lead to a professional credential — everything else is learning material.
JavaScript & Web Fundamentals
6–8 weeksMost blockchain development builds on web development skills. Get strong in JavaScript first — async patterns, API calls, Node.js. You will use these constantly.
Blockchain Concepts & Ethereum
3–4 weeksUnderstand how blockchain works at a protocol level — consensus mechanisms, transactions, wallets, and gas. Read the Ethereum whitepaper summary and official developer docs.
Solidity Smart Contracts
6–8 weeksSolidity is the main language for Ethereum smart contracts. CryptoZombies teaches it interactively. Learn state variables, mappings, events, modifiers, and how to avoid common pitfalls.
Smart Contract Security
4–6 weeksSmart contracts are immutable once deployed. Security vulnerabilities cost millions. Study common attack vectors — reentrancy, integer overflow, access control flaws — using OpenZeppelin resources.
Build & Deploy a dApp
6–8 weeksBuild a complete decentralised application — a token, a simple DeFi protocol, or an NFT mint. Deploy to testnet. Connect a React frontend using ethers.js or wagmi.

// FIND WORK
Find Blockchain Developer jobs
Start with “Blockchain Developer”. Platforms without stable public search URLs open with this suggested phrase.
LinkedIn Jobs
Broad professional job search with keyword, location, experience-level and remote filters.
Wellfound
Startup and technology roles with company and compensation context.
Dice
Specialist technology roles across engineering, data, security and infrastructure.
Built In
Technology and startup job discovery, including remote and city-focused listings.
UK visa and international opportunities
Sponsorship depends on the employer, vacancy and current immigration rules. Use the linked official guidance and verify every role before applying.
Going independent
Smart contract auditing is the highest-value independent path — and the crypto bull markets create surges of development activity that drives consulting demand.
Smart Contract Auditing
High effortReview and audit smart contracts for security vulnerabilities before deployment.
Examples
- DeFi protocol security audits
- ERC-20 token contract reviews
- NFT contract security assessments
- Cross-chain bridge auditing
Getting started
- 1. Build deep knowledge of smart contract vulnerabilities (reentrancy, overflow, etc.)
- 2. Contribute audit reports to Code4rena or Sherlock competitions
- 3. Build a portfolio of public audit reports
- 4. Partner with established audit firms like Trail of Bits or OpenZeppelin
Web3 Consulting and dApp Development
Medium effortBuild decentralised applications for companies entering the blockchain space.
Examples
- NFT platforms and marketplaces
- Token launch smart contracts and frontends
- DAO tooling and governance systems
- DeFi integration for traditional finance companies
Getting started
- 1. Build a complete dApp project and document it publicly
- 2. List on blockchain-specific talent platforms (Crypto Jobs List, Web3 Careers)
- 3. Join Discord communities of projects looking for developers

// EARNING POTENTIAL
Earning potential
2025Salaries are high but volatile — heavily influenced by crypto market conditions. Token compensation can dramatically increase or decrease total earnings.
Freelance rates
Day rate
£400–£1k
Hourly rate
£50–£125
What affects salary
- Smart contract audit skills are the highest-paid specialism in this field
- DeFi protocol experience commands a premium over NFT or general dApp work
- Token compensation is common — factor in vesting schedules and market risk
- Security knowledge is essential for senior roles, given high value of exploit risk
- Layer 2 (Optimism, Arbitrum, Base) experience is increasingly valued
🌍 Blockchain roles are often fully remote and frequently pay in token compensation alongside GBP/USD base salaries. Global talent market applies.
