What does a Distributed Systems Engineer do?
Distributed systems engineers tackle some of the hardest problems in computer science — making software that is consistent, available, and fault-tolerant when spread across many machines. You work on databases, message queues, consensus algorithms, and the infrastructure that large-scale systems depend on. This path takes time to get into but pays off significantly. Good fit if you enjoy deep technical problems and want to specialise in something most people never attempt.

4–6 weeksLearn Apache Kafka — how it handles high-throughput messaging, how consumers work, and how it provides durability guarantees. Most large-scale distributed systems use it.
Consensus Algorithms & Database Internals
8–10 weeksStudy Raft and Paxos consensus algorithms. Learn how databases are actually implemented — storage engines, WAL, MVCC. CMU 15-445 is the best free database internals course.
