Platform Engineer

Build the internal platforms that other engineers build on top of.

advanced Remote friendly

What does a Platform Engineer do?

Platform engineers build and maintain the developer experience inside a company — the pipelines, tooling, and abstractions that let product teams ship faster and more safely. Think of it as building the roads other engineers drive on. This path takes time to get into but pays off significantly. Good fit if you enjoy deep technical problems and want to specialise in something most people never attempt.

Who it fits

People who enjoy making other developers more productive and care about developer experience as much as end-user experience.

Suits systematic learners who enjoy building things that improve other engineers lives.

Starter projects

Good projects to practise and add to a portfolio.

  • Build a CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions from scratch
  • Set up a local Kubernetes cluster with Minikube
  • Create a Helm chart for a sample application
  • Build a simple internal developer portal with Backstage

// ROADMAP

Platform Engineer career roadmap

Estimated time: 12–18 months

Badges show what each resource is. Only items marked certification lead to a professional credential — everything else is learning material.

1

Software Engineering & Linux

6–8 weeks

Platform engineers are software engineers who build infrastructure. Start with strong programming fundamentals in Python or Go, combined with solid Linux skills.

2

Docker & Kubernetes

8–10 weeks

Internal developer platforms are built on containers. Master Docker and Kubernetes deeply — not just "kubectl apply" but understanding what happens under the hood.

3

CI/CD & GitOps

4–6 weeks

Platform engineers build the pipelines other teams use. Learn GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and ArgoCD for GitOps deployments. Understand how to design pipeline templates at scale.

4

Internal Developer Platforms

4–6 weeks

Study Backstage — the open-source IDP that many large companies have adopted. Understand service catalogues, software templates, and how to reduce cognitive load for engineering teams.

5

Open Source Contribution & Job Ready

Ongoing

Contributing to open-source platform tooling (Backstage, ArgoCD, Crossplane) is the most direct route to a platform engineering role. It signals technical credibility at interview.

Going independent

Platform engineering consulting is growing as companies invest in developer productivity. Fractional platform engineering is an emerging and lucrative service model.

Platform Engineering Consulting

Medium effort
⏱ 2–5 months to first income£450–£900 per day

Help engineering teams build internal developer platforms, CI/CD systems, and Kubernetes infrastructure.

Examples

  • Internal developer platform setup using Backstage
  • GitOps pipeline design with ArgoCD
  • Kubernetes platform design for growing engineering teams
  • Developer experience audits and improvement programmes

Getting started

  1. 1. Get CKA and relevant cloud certifications first
  2. 2. Position around developer productivity — quantify the time savings you deliver
  3. 3. Target engineering leaders (CTOs, VPEs) not just engineering managers
  4. 4. Productise a "Platform Engineering Kickstart" at £5,000–£15,000 fixed price

Open Source Platform Tooling

High effort
⏱ 6–24 months to first income£2,000–£50,000+ per month

Build open-source platform tooling and monetise through cloud hosting, enterprise support, or training.

Examples

  • Backstage plugins with commercial support tiers
  • Kubernetes operator development and commercial licensing
  • Developer portal solutions for specific industries

Getting started

  1. 1. Contribute to CNCF projects to build reputation and distribution
  2. 2. Identify gaps in the existing platform engineering toolset
  3. 3. Build in public and engage the Backstage and ArgoCD communities
