What does a Robotics Engineer do?

Robotics engineers design and program systems that interact with the physical world — from factory automation to surgical robots to autonomous vehicles. The work combines software, mathematics, and an understanding of how mechanical systems behave. This path takes time to get into but pays off significantly. Good fit if you enjoy deep technical problems and want to specialise in something most people never attempt.

Robotics uses both Python (for high-level control and ML) and C++ (for performance-critical code). Get comfortable in both. C++ pointers and classes are worth learning early.

Kinematics, control theory, and computer vision all require linear algebra and calculus. Study transformation matrices, eigenvalues, and differential equations with 3Blue1Brown.

ROS (Robot Operating System) is the standard middleware for robotics. Learn nodes, topics, services, and how to write publishers and subscribers. Simulate robots in Gazebo before touching real hardware.

Computer Vision with OpenCV

4–6 weeks

Most robots need to see. Learn OpenCV for image processing — edge detection, object detection, and camera calibration. Combine with ROS for perception pipelines.

Build Robot Projects

Build a line-following robot, an arm controller, or an autonomous navigation project. Gazebo simulation lets you test without hardware. Document everything — robotics portfolios are rare and impressive.
